Sale 113C Preface
Tuesday, 01 November 2016
When Ian Cummins, a longstanding client and friend, approached me to handle a large section of his varied collection I was glad to accept.
The scale of the task became apparent when Ian arrived from Tasmania with the collection. With our team already busy with Les Carlisle’s collection we required an enormous effort from everyone to ensure the quality of the catalogue matched the quality of the collection. Ian’s handwritten descriptions were an invaluable source of information and we received superb input from our friend and neighbour in Macquarie Street, Paul Duffy, past president of the Antique Arms Collectors Society. The result is catalogue 113C, the third and final publication of this auction.
The catalogue commences with edged weapons and proceeds through antique firearms and accessories, miniatures, hand crafted gold jewellery, including gold fields brooches, pocket watches, wrist watches, scrimshaw and miscellaneous Australiana. Outstanding highlights are the Lloyd’s Patriotic Fund sword and decorations awarded to the Lieutenant Governor, Sir Maurice Charles O’Connell (lot 3696; estimate $175,000) and the presentation sword and scabbard to Captain William Radcliffe with Victoria Rifle Association gold medal and Whitworth target rifle (lot 3973; estimate $60,000).
On behalf of the company I would like to thank, firstly, Ian and Judith for having the confidence to entrust us with their treasures for auction. I would like to make special mention of our entire staff who were all involved in producing this catalogue to such a high standard.
Please do not hesitate to approach us with any enquiries you may have about attending the viewing or auction. We wish you every success in your bidding.
