Bid at live.noble.com.au
SOLD $420

GERMANICUS, (died A.D. 19), AE dupondius, issued under Caligula A.D. 37-41, Rome mint, obv. Germanicus in slow quadriga to right, above GERMANICVS CAESAR in two lines, rev. Germanicus standing left, S and C across field, SIGNIS - RECEPT over DEVICTIS - GERM, (RIC 57, BMC 94, S.599 £275). Attractive brown patina, very fine and rare in this condition.

This type commemorates Germanicus' spectacular military successes in Germany early in the reign of Tiberius. He died mysteriously at Antioch in A.D. 19, and all the coinage in his name seems to have been struck under his son Caligula, and his brother, Claudius.
