THESSALY, Larissa, silver drachm, 400-350 B.C., (5.99 g), BCD dates early - mid 4th century, obv. Nymph Larissa three quarters facing to left of good style, wearing plain necklace, dotted border, rev. Horse to right, feeding on solid exergue line and ethnic rather awkwardly engraved, **LARIS* above. Large flan with striking cracks, (BCD 267 ([This Coin] CNG Triton XV), cf.Herrmann ZfN (1925) -, C.Lorber (Florilegium Numismaticum, studies. U. Westermark), Group 7, head 27, No. 89,1 (same dies as illustrated), CNG e-sale 283 (25 July, 2012), (lot 61, This Coin), cf.S.2124). Large flan with striking cracks, extremely fine, extremely rare and noted by BCD as having nice detail.

Ex CNG Electronic Auction Sale July 25, 2012 (lot 61) and previously from the Triton XV, Classical Numismatic Group, January 3, 2012 (lot 267) coming from the BCD Collection, who acquired it from Hoard Z. This coin obverse and reverse dies has been published and illustrated (No.89.1 known by only two other examples), by C.C. Lorber in the article 'The Early Facing Head Drachms of Thessalian Larissa' in Florilegium Numismaticum, Studia in Honorem U. Westermark Edita, pp.259-282. This coin an important piece in the transition from the early facing heads to the middle and late facing heads.
