ATTICA, Athens, (166-57 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (16.62 g), issued 168-7 B.C., (Thompson date) but probably 136-5 B.C. (revised chronology), obv. head of Athena Parthenos to right wearing triple-crested Athenian helmet, ornamented with Pegasus, within dotted border, rev. owl standing to right, head facing, in erect posture, on prostrate amphora, **G* on amphora, legend across **A QE, to left HPA to right across API **STOF/ DHMH*, club, lion's skin and bow in case, below **GL*, all within wreath, (cf.S.2555, Thompson 332a [same obverse die, new reverse dies]). Slightly off centre reverse, otherwise good very fine and rare (unpublished dies).

Ex Brian Bolton Collection and previously from Noble Numismatics Sale 85 (lot 1443) and previously from CNG Auction Sale XXXII, December 7, 1994 (lot 1274).
A rare issue. Thompson knew of 84 examples of this year from all dies, issue struck from 12 obverse and 56 reverse dies.
