NEW ZEALAND MEDAL 1869, (undated reverse). 2357. Sergt. Danl. Hegarty, 40th Foot. Impressed. Very fine.

2357 Daniel Hegarty enlisted underage serving as a Private 08Apr1846-07Oct1846; then as of-age Private 08Oct1846-01Aug1850; Corporal 02Aug1850-31Oct1854; Sergeant 01Nov1854-05Feb1869; Discharged at Own Request; Service included 7 years 8 months in Australian colonies and 6 years 1 month in New Zealand.

Embarked on the Vulcan ex Cork 13Jul1852 and disembarked at Geelong, Victoria 05Nov1852; Sgt Daniel Hegarty, 40th Foot Regiment, took part in the Battle of the Eureka Stockade 03Dec1854.

An extract from the book titled, 'Eureka Stockade' by Raffaello Carboni states, 'Sergeant Hegarty, examined by the Attorney-General, 'I am a sergeant in the 40th. I was in the attack on the stockade. I was beside Captain Wise when he was shot. He (Captain Wise) was shot from the stockade. I saw the prisoner at the stockade. I was in the guard which took him to the Camp. The prisoner did not get away, I know. I saw him a prisoner in the Camp about five o'clock.'

Another extract from the book titled, 'Massacre at Eureka - The Untold Story' by Bob O'Brien states, 'Sergeant Daniel Hegarty of the 40th one of the skirmishing party, halted with the troops about twenty paces from the Stockade. They extended from the right. The 12th were extended from the right of the 40th. The troops advanced a little when the fighting began and received a good many shots which they did not return until the bugle sounded. At the bugle's sound they fired and then charged. Several of the 40th fell under the insurgents' fusillade, one pitching forward at Sergeant Hegarty's feet, bleeding from a chest wound. He saw Captain Wise fall, and pushed Magistrate Hackett aside as he attempted to staunch Wise's bleeding.'

With research including 4 page copy of Discharge document.
