INDIA GENERAL SERVICE MEDAL 1908-35, (GVR Kaisar-I-Hind 1910-30), - clasp - Waziristan 1919-21. Lieut. J.F.Roberts, Aus. Staff. Cps. Impressed. Good very fine and rare.

Note: In Australians Awarded (4th Ed) by R.M.Williams this medal is named as the only one issued to an Australian.

John Fendick Roberts was born at Kew on 11Oct1898. His father was a stock and share broker. He attended school at Trinity Grammar 1905-14, Robert Jones College Feb-Oct1915 and Melbourne High School 1916. On 09Aug1916 at age 18 he applied to attend the Royal Military College of Australia at Duntroon where he was a Staff Cadet with rank of Sergeant and graduated on 15Dec1920. He joined the newly formed Australian Staff Corps (established 01Oct1920) and was posted for service with British forces in Waziristan.

WWII: Lt 07Mar1940 in Perth Area; to Infy Trg Depot at Northam 17Jun1940; to 2 Trg Bn at Northam 24Mar1941; Temp Capt 10May1941; Temp Maj 25Aug1941 at Army HQs Melbourne; Enl.08Sep1941 in AIF (VX63150) at Royal Park, Vic; to HQ AIF Malaya (Admin HQ) 20Oct1941; RTA and then to Singapore arriving 25Nov1941; MIA Singapore 16Feb1942; POW at Changi; Recovered 04Sep1945; Emb18Sep1945 from Singapore for RTA; Disch.06Aug1946; to Reserve of Officers 07Aug1946; Died 21Aug1961.
