George Bernard Coates, gardener, aged 23, born at Hull, England; Enl. 24Aug1914 at South Melbourne, Vic, with 2 years previous service with 4Bn Duke of Wellington's West Riding Regt; Emb.21Oct1914; to join MEF 06Apr1915 for Gallipoli Campaign; 5Bn was in second wave at the landing on 25Apr1915; WIA 26Apr1915 left arm (slight) at Gallipoli; KIA 09-10Aug1915 at (Lone Pine) Gallipoli; commemorated at the Lone Pine Memorial.
