NEW ZEALAND MEDAL 1869, undated reverse. 1403. J.Smith 65th Regt. Impressed. Contact marks, otherwise very fine.

James Smith joined the 65th Regt on 01Jan1841 and initially placed to the Depot Unit at Exeter.

The 65th (2nd Yorkshire North Riding) Regiment of Foot, known in New Zealand as the Hickety Pips, based on the Maori naming for 65th, namely hikete piwhete, served in New Zealand between 1846-1865, the longest serving of any British regiment.
