RUSSIA/POLAND, 1864 Village Elders Badge, brass oval shape 54x45 with chain and bar support with pin, obv. crowned monogram of Alexander II and date 1864, rev. Imperial crown, (Werlich, 'Russian Orders Decoration and Medals', 2nd edn., 1981 p.66 and illustrated). Extremely fine.

Ex I. Beskish Collection. These medals or badges were issued to village leaders or Russian elders (starosty), equivalent to councilmen, similar types (see next lot) were also issued to judges, Justices of the Peace, court bailiffs and several other positions of importance. They were issued in Russian occupied Poland during the civil uprising in 1863-4.
