SICILY, Messana, (425-421 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (17.344 grams), obv. biga of mules driven to right by seated male charioteer, Nike flying above crowning horses, in exergue two dolphins facing each other, dotted border, rev. **MES S ANIO N, hare running to right, dolphin to right below, (cf.S.843 [£650], Caltabiano 499 [obv.die 202, rev. die 207], SNG ANS 361). Struck from sharp new dies, rough original silver blank, otherwise extremely fine and very rare in this condition.
