TIERRA DEL FUEGO, (part of island under Argentina), token coinage in gold of Julius Popper ('Gold Washers of the South') Buenos Aires minted issue one gramo, 1889 (KM.Tn5). Filed rim to test on reverse at 1 o'clock, toned, good extremely fine and rare.

Julius Popper (1857-93), the Romanian-Jewish adventurer born in Bucharest, arrived in Tierra del Fuego in 1884 to prospect for gold in the north of the Island. His small issue of coins in 1889 are deemed to be the first gold trade coins to be issued by a Jew.
