MACEDON, Kingdom of, Alexander III, (336-323 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (16.30 g), Perga (Perge) mint, year 26, issued 196-195 B.C., obv. head of Herakles to right wearing lion skin with dotted border, countermarked with anchor on lion skin, rev. Zeus seated on throne to left, eagle in outstretched hand, K**S* to left in field, to right **ALEXANDROU*, (cf.S.6713, Price 2940, BMC 2940, M.1242, Mektepini 535-6). Very fine, scarce.

There are a number of posthumous Alexander tetradrachms with similar 'anchor' countermarks, which are thought to have been applied during the time of the Seleukid ruler, Antiochos IV.
