Estimate $5,000
Bid at live.noble.com.au
SOLD $5,500

ANCIENT BRITISH, Western Region, Inscribed coins, Dobunni, Catti Tree type, (c.1-20 A.D.), gold stater, (5.42 g), obv. tree symbol on plain field, triple tailed horse to right, CATTI above, two pellets, crescent and tiny x below forming hidden face, pellet triad below tail, six spoked wheel below, (S.384, ABC 2057, Van A 1130, WE 7-8, BMC 3057-60, M 391). Neat flan of rose gold, smooth surfaces, sharply struck with clear legend, extremely fine, an immaculate example, rare.

Private purchase from Chris Rudd, list 112, #33.

Only 39 Catti gold staters are recorded and they are extremely scarce on the market. Chris Rudd notes that this is the finest example he has handled. "The quality of the metal is alluring - a warm, pinkish gold - and the surfaces are silky smooth. The long legged triple tailed horse is wholly revealed and you can clearly see both the king's name at the top and the whole of the sun wheel at the bottom."

The Dobunni were a western tribe whose heartland lay in the Cotswolds, covering Gloucestershire, Worcestershire and Avon, stretching to Somerset, Wiltshire and Oxfordshire.
