ANCIENT BRITISH, North Thames Region, Trinovantes, Inscribed coins, Dubnovellaunos Branch type, (c.5 B.C.-10 A.D.), gold stater, (5.42 g), obv. banded flan with wreath motif, two outline crescents and two rings in centre, forming two hidden faces, rev. [DV]BNOVALLAVNOS around, full-bodied horse prancing left, with beaded mane and long high-arched tail, ringed pellet above, wavy branch below, (S.207, ABC 2392, Van A 1650/1655 var, NT 7, BMC 2425-40, M 275/275a var, BNJ 2008, p.7, fig 4b [this coin], CCI 03.1386 [this coin]). Nice flan of good gold, attractive example of the horse, good very fine - nearly extremely fine and very rare.

An important published coin which reveals two clear examples of the early British letter A.



Rainer Kretz says: "This interesting and rarely offered Dubnovellaunos stater was struck early on in the production of this extremely varied and long-lasting series. There are only three coins known from this particular die combination."
