ANCIENT BRITISH, North Thames Region, Catuvellauni, Uninscribed coins, Whaddon Wings Speared Horse type, (c.55-45 B.C.), gold quarter stater, (1.37 g), obv. wreath, angular wing motif above, cloak lines bottom left, two crescents forming eyes to bottom right, rev. horse leaping right, 'spear' through neck, ringed pellet below, exergual line beneath, (S.-, ABC 2457 var, Van A 1478, NT 4-5, S -, BMC -, M -, CCI 12.0199 [this coin]). Bright gold, well centred horse with clear spear, extremely fine and extremely rare.

Only three other 'speared' variants of the quarter stater have been recorded.



Dr John Sills stated on 29 October 2012 that this is arguably the finest known Whaddon Chase quarter stater in existence.
