SOLD $500

ANCIENT BRITISH, North Thames Region, Tasciovanos, Uninscribed coins, Tasciovanos Quatrefoil type, (c.25 B.C.-12 A.D.), gold quarter stater, (1.32 g), obv. crossed wreqaths motif of triple lines, one curved, one straight, back-to-back crescents at centre, teardrops in angles, rev. horse to left, foreleg raised, large ring for head, traces of [TA]SCIA[VA] above, acorn below, (S.221, ABC 2586, Van A 1688, NT 7, BMC 1651-53, M 161, CCI 08.9256 [this coin]). Attractive pale gold, impressive horse with traces of legend clearly visible, nearly extremely fine and very rare.

Private purchase from Chris Rudd, list 101, #49.

It is extremely rare to have the traces of legend visible on the reverse.

Previously these quarter staters were attributed to Tasciovanos only on stylistic grounds but an article in Spink Numismatic Circular, Vol CVI, #1, 1998 announced the discovery of an example with enough legend visible to attribute the piece to Tasciovanos. This coin is very similar with the traces of legend.
