ANZAC COMMEMORATIVE MEDALLION 1915, issued in 1967, in bronze (50x75mm) (C.1915/3), named to S.J.Hill. In case of issue with certificate, uncirculated.

In case with medallion is a hand drawn note, 'Samuel John Hill/Jean's Great Uncle'.

Samuel John Hill, warehouse assistant, age 18, born at South Brisbane, Qld; Enl.11May1915 at Brisbane, Qld (Service No.2225) with previous service in Senior Cadets; Emb.12Jun1915 with 15Bn Reinforcements; to Gallipoli 02Aug1915; to 47Bn 03Mar1916; to L/Cpl 31May1916; to Cpl 04Sep1916. to Sgt 05Nov1916; awarded Military Medal 23Jun1917 (CAG No.219 20/12/1917); to 2/Lieut 04Jul1917; to Lt with 45Bn 26May1918; KIA 18Sep1918 - Lieut. S.J.Hill died from shell wounds received on the early morning of 18th Sept.1918. Whilst leading his men in the attack he was severely wounded on the left leg and thigh. His men bound him up and left him for the stretcher bearers who were following and who report that they found him dead, apparently from loss of blood. He was carried back and buried with two of his men at R.14 b.5.7 Sheet Jeancourt 1/20,000 (9 miles east of Peronne). A cross was erected to mark his last resting place.
