CHINA, Souvenir of Hong Xian Yuan, undated (1916), by Tian Jin Mint, obverse features bust in military uniform of Hung-hsien (the name used by Yuan Shi-kai as emperor), reverse with Chinese characters in relief, translated to, 'The Tian Jin Mint System/Souvenir of Hong Xian Yuan'. Toned, good very fine.

The year 1916 was the first year of Hong Xian after Yuan Shi-kai announced acceptance of the restoration of the monarchy on 12 December 1915. The portrait on the medal is identical to that of the Chinese dollars issued in 1914 and 1916. The same design was used on both. The first as Yuan Shi-kai and the second under the name he used as emperor, Hung-hsien. The designer was Italian sculptor Luigi Giorgi who worked for the Tian Jin Mint.
