PAIR: China War Medal 1900; Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve Long Service and Good Conduct Medal (GVR type 1). R.S.Malone, C.P.O., N.S.Wales Nav. Contgt. on first medal, P.O. R.S.Malone on second medal. Both medals impressed. Swing mounted, a few small edge bumps, otherwise very fine.

On Wednesday Night 15May 1901 a gathering in Queen Victoria Markets Hall of petty officers and men made a presentation to Captain Gillespie who commanded the NSW Naval Contingent to China. The presentation was made by the State Premier on the eve of Captain Gillespie's departure from Sydney. CPO R.S.Malone occupied the chair for the occasion.

On Saturday 18 April 1903 a race was held on Sydney Harbour between a team of blue jackets from HMS Royal Arthur and a team from the NSW Naval Brigade using 2 Naval Brigade whalers altered to suit the men and conducted over a course extending from the HMS Royal Arthur round Shark Island and back, a distance of five shore miles. The Naval Brigade team was AB Calcraft, CPO Pulsford, AB Price, AB Empson, AB Woodcock and the coxswain was R.S.Malone. The Jack-tars from the Royal Arthur won the race easily by a full 12 lengths.

On Saturday 17 May 1913 Sir George King Hall, Admiral Commanding-in-Chief, presented medals for volunteer officers' decoration and also long service and good conduct at a ceremony held on a dais under the lee of the figurehead of the century-old Nelson, the first ship of Australia's navy, flanked by a guard of smart young Australians serving under the universal training system. One of the recipients presented with a long service and good conduct medal was Petty Officer R.S.Malone of the NSW Naval Brigade.
