Leslie Roy Hilton Tweed, born Mt Perry (Qld) in 1919; Enl 14Feb1945; served with 58/59th Aus Inf Battn.

MM: LG 4/10/1934; CAG 27/9/1945 South Bougainville - Buin Road - Aitara Trail.

For outstanding devotion to duty, calm bearing under heavy fire and conspicuous conduct in attending to the wounded while carrying out the duties of medical orderly. Pte Tweed is B Company medical aid post orderly. On 22nd May 1945, B Company was consolidating on its objective after a successful battalion attack east of the Hongorai River on the Buin Road. As the men were digging the weapon pits the position was subjected to intense, accurate enemy shelling and heavy machine gun fire, which caused serious casualties to our troops. With complete unconcern for the enemy fire, Pte Tweed showing remarkable devotion to duty, moved coolly around the company area attending the many wounded. Despite the fact that he was blown off his feet three times by the blast from 150 millimetre shells, he carried on with great determination and courage, to give medical aid to those in need. As Pte Tweed continued this sterling work he was wounded in the foot and the shoulder, but with amazing fortitude, he carried on doing magnificent work. Only when all were attended to and evacuated to the regimental aid post, did Pte Tweed allow himself to be evacuated, and then it was on the order of the Company Commander. Pte Tweed's inspiring courage and extreme devotion to his duty, as well as his calm bearing during the enemy fire and concentrations had a splendid influence on the moral of the Company. His gallant conduct and cheerful manner has been a constant source of pride and example to the members of his Company.
