GROUP OF FOUR: 1939-45 Star; Pacific Star; War Medal 1939-45; Australia Service Medal 1939-45. First two medals unnamed, E.L.Susman. R.A.N.R. on last two medals. Named medals impressed. Display mounted, first two toned, otherwise nearly extremely fine.

Eric Leo (Gus) Susman, under graduate Art Section at Sydney University, age 18, born at Mosman, Sydney, NSW; WWI: Enl.09Sep1914 at Rosebery Park Camp, Sydney, NSW in 13Bn; Emb.22Dec1914; WIA 09May1915 GSW left thigh and calf at Gallipoli; Trf to 45Bn 03Mar1916; to Cpl 04Mar1916; at direction of Neville Howse VC, Director of Medical Services, he was RTA 21May1916 to complete medical studies; Disch.13Jul1916; accepted a commission as Surgeon Lieut 01Jul1934 in RANR at Sydney, NSW with occupation recorded as Consulting Physician MB, Ch.M, M.R.C.P. (London), F.R.A.C.P. of Edgecliffe, Sydney, NSW; WWII: mobilised for war service 02Sep1939; to Surgeon Lieut Cdr 01Jul1940; to Acting Surgeon Cdr 13Mar1945; served in various postings including HMAS Australia, Westralia, Royal Sovereign, Canberra, Hobart and others; Disch.23Jan1946 as Surgeon Cdr; Retired 06Jun1949; his civilian appointments included RMO, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney 1921-22; Hon Asst Physician, 1926, Tutor in Medicine, 1932; Hon Physician in Neurology, Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children, Sydney; Hon Director Northcott Neurological Diagnostic Centre, 1952; Lecturer in Clinical Medicine, University of Sydney; Died 10Jun1959 while Warden of Clinical Studies at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney.

The Eric Susman Prize, is named in his honour. It is a prestigious award for the best contribution to the knowledge of any branch of internal medicine and has been awarded by the Royal Australian College of Physicians every year since 1962 except 1990 when there was no winner. There was also a medallion cast in his honour after his death in 1959 by the legendary sculptor and medallist, Andor Meszaros.
