TABOR SHIELD LIFE SAVING COMPETITION MEDAL, 1915, in silver with gold centre (34x44.5mm), hallmarked for Birmingham 1913 by maker, Marples & Beasley, obverse inscribed, 'C.Mander', reverse inscribed, 'Tabor Shield/L.S.Comp./1915'. Fine and rare.
The Tabor Shield was established as a life-saving competition in 1914 by Mr G.Tabor shortly after his arrival in New Plymouth with the first competition to be held in 1915. The Tabor Shield was to be held annually and could not be won outright but the winning team held the shield until the next competition. C.S.Mander, a member of the New Plymouth Surf and Life-Saving Club was a member of the winning team, East End No.2, in the Tabor Memorial Shield that was held on Easter Monday 1915.
