ROBERT DEVEREUX, Earl of Essex, 1642, badge in silver, by Thomas Simon or Thomas Rawlins?, 33x23mm, (5.10 g), obverse, bust of Earl of Essex turned slightly to left, reverse, oval garnished shield of Essex, surmounted by coronet, (MIi 117). Cast and chased, possibly once gilt, good very fine, very rare.

Ex Matthew Rich Collection and previously Noble Numismatics Sale 54, lot 1137. Also ex A.H. Baldwin & Sons, cf listing for 1996 (No.502). This badge has rings for suspension, and was probably intended for a military reward.
