CHINA, Zhang Xianzhong, large AE 49, valour medal by this rebel ruler, in 1644; obv. 'Zi Wang Shang Gong' with a square hole, rev. plain. Very fine and very rare, lot includes a short account of this ruler.

He was nicknamed Yellow Tiger, a leader of a peasant revolt from Yan'an, Shaanxi Province. He conquered Sichuan in 1644, and named himself king of the Xi (Da-Xi) dynasty. His rule in Sichuan was brief and he was killed by the invading Manchu army. He ordered commemorative coins as awards to his officers and soldiers who contributed to the success of his victories.
