CHINA, late 19th century, fossil (mammoth) ivory carving, depicting a fully enrobed bearded scholar in a contented sleeping position, (110 mm high), signed to base. Toned, very fine.

The mammoth ivory used in this piece dates from c.10,000 B.C.
