SOLD $190

PHILIP I, (A.D. 244-249), AE sestertius, Rome mint, issed A.D. 248, (15.932 grams), obv. IMP M IVL PHILIPPVS AVG, laureate bust right, rev. SAECVLARES AVGG, S C in exergue, she-wolf to left suckling twins, (S.2600, RIC 159, C.179). Nearly very fine, with an interesting reverse.

Ex W. Woolmer Collection, Spink (Australia) Sale 24 (lot 1533). The reverse alludes to the 1000th anniversary of the foundation of Rome (in A.D. 248), an event celebrated on April 21. The Saecular Games seem to have been held later in the year and is referred to by the reverse legend of this coin.
