ATTICA, Athens, (455-449 B.C.), silver tetradrachm, (17.042 grams), issue c.455-449 B.C., obv. head of Athena to right wearing ivy crested helmet, eye in profile, rev. owl standing to right, head facing on angle, in erect posture, olive twig and crescent behind, to right, **AQE, all in incuse square, (S.2526, Starr type VB series 4 no.202 [same dies, obv.174, rev. 191], SNG Cop.31). Flaw on cheek, otherwise about as struck, extremely fine, very rare.

The series of Athenian tetradrachms issued before 449 B.C. are very few in number and Starr in his book knew of only about 65 examples with most in public collections for this type V.
