LVFB (LYTTELTON VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE), fob medal, hand engraved in gold (9ct, 10.63g, 30mm), by C.Mazey (Lyttelton), scroll and ring top suspension, reverse inscribed 'Presented/To/R.G.Buchanan/For/18 Years Service'; (West Lyttelton School) Dux, fob, hand engraved in gold (9ct, 5.24g, 29mm), no maker, ring top suspension, reverse inscribed 'W.L.S./S.Buchanan/1952'. Very fine. (2)
R.G. 'George' Buchanan joined the Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade on 10 December 1897 two months after the house next door to him burned down. He was appointed foreman in 1907 and remained a member until his retirement on 7 April 1915 when he was made an Honorary Life Member. The LVFB was believed to be one of the oldest volunteer groups. The school Dux medal was awarded to George's granddaughter, Shirley Buchanan.
