Arthur Liston Wilson was born in Auckland on 5 August 1870, the grandson of William Chisholm Wilson, the founder of the New Zealand Herald newspaper. He attended Auckland Grammar School where he excelled in athletics and gymnastics. After completing his schooling he spent many years on the staff of the Herald.
