Clifford James Burling. Born Silverstream, New Zealand 16Mar1917. Died 3Jan1978. M.I.D.: R/O 64 19Apr1042. M.M.: 'On 27 June 1942, Burling showed great initiative, resource and personal courage in leading and navigating convoys from Minquar Qaim to the main dressing station. The presence of the enemy forced him to turn from the track shown to him, yet he succeeded in bringing to safety, a large number of the wounded. He later returned to the Divisional Area for further wounded, passing through country which was then being traversed by enemy patrols. During the breakthrough at night he was separated from the convoy but resourcefully found his way back to the Alemein line. During the remainder of the campaign he consistently showed resource, initiative and complete disregard of personal safety'.
