FAMILY GROUP. Military Cross (GVR). Engraved on reverse 'Pozieres. Lieut N. G. Mathews 17th Batt. A.I.F. 25.7.16' Father: Coronation Medal 1911 - County and Borough Police, engraved on edge: 'Presented to Inspector Mathews by H.M. The King. August 14th 1912.' Son-in-Law: Indian General Service Medal 1908 - one bar - Afghanistan - N.W.F. 1919. 2.Lieut. G. Murray, Corps of Guides. Impressed. Three awards. Very fine.
MC: C.G.14 December 1916. 'For conspicuous gallantry in action. He showed great courage when driving the enemy out of our trenches. His fine example gave great encouragement to the men. Though once wounded and twice buried by shells, he insisted on remaining at his post.' Together with boxing medal to last recipient, extract from 'History of 17Bn. A.I.F.' and newspaper clipping. MC in case of issue.
