GALLO-BELGIC, imported to Britain, uninscribed Coinage, Gallo-Belgic E, Ambiani type, issued during Gallic War, (c.55 B.C.), gold stater, (6.2 grams), obv. blank, rev. crude Celticized disjointed horse to right, with pellet below horse, (S.7, Van A. 54-1). Good very fine and rare.
Ex. Classical Numismatic Group auction, September 2, 1992 (lot 914). In a paper 'The Origins of Coinage in Britain' Dr. John Kent suggests that the date for the Gallo-Belgic E series should be revised to that given above, and quotes Simone Scheers to suggest that this coinage represents the last independent coinage of the Belgae in Gaul, struck to specifically finance the war with Caesar.
