SWEDEN, Karl XI, (1660-1667), One Daler Plate Money, Avesta mint, 1667 of size 170 x 180 mms, (1.4 kgms), (cf.Tingstrom, B., Plate Money, the World's Largest Currency, p.268). Extremely fine and very rare.
Shortage of silver along with an abundance of copper lead to the manufacture of copper coin from rectangular plate. The date and rulers circular stamps were stamped in the four corners and the denomination was stamped in the middle. Coins up to ten dalers were issued (weighing 19.7 kilograms) as a means of marketing Swedens enormous copper reserves during the 17th and 18th centuries.
