SAMARIA, Satrap issue, (375-345 B.C.), silver obol, (0.575 grams), Meshorer & Qedar `Coinage of Samaria' No.8 (30 known, p.46), Samaria Hoard No. 88 (this coin) (p.73 and Plate 25). obv. female head (Arethusa) facing, border of dots, rev. bearded male head to l., with crested Athenian helmet to l., and traces in Aramaic [SMRYN]. Very fine for issue and very rare.

ex Samaria Hoard (88) and Sotheby, Zurich, Sale Oct. 27-8, 1993 (lot 986 part). The discovery of this hoard and the finds of a few other specimens, established the existance of a series for a country and era never previously recognised in the published literature.
