REPUBLIC, Anonymous didrachm coinage, (280 - 276 B.C.), silver didrachm, Metapontum mint?, obv. helmeted head of Mars to left, bearded, oak sprig behind, rev. ROMANO on tablet below horse's head to right, horse with bridle, ear of corn behind, (S.62, Cr. 13/1, Syd. 1). Edge split with die crack to centre of coin otherwise, good very fine and rare.

This is the first silver issue of the Roman Republic. It was also probably struck at the Metapontum mint using Greek die engravers.
