SHAH ALAM II, (A.H. 1173-1221), (A.D.1759-1806), round Nazarana Gold mohur, (10.65 grams), struck at Shahjahanabad Dar-ul-Khilafat (Delhi), mint, issued A.H. 1218 (A.D. 1803-4), Regnal year 46, obv. within dotted and double circular border on both sides, obv. Shah Alam II name at top, full date on flan centre right, with Imperial umbrella and five petal flower mintmark, rev. mint name at top, Regnal year lower left, on flowered field, (BMC 1104, cf.Punjab Museum Lahore 2861 (RY 45), cf.Indian Museum Calcutta 2281 (RY 45), Lucknow 4495, KM. SAC 721). Maybe a trace of mount on edge, otherwise nearly extremely fine, and extremely rare.
Ex. Glendining's London, mid 1960's. $$ This is the first type of true nazarana to be struck by the Mogul emperors, in the sense that it was a regularly produced version of a narrow flan mohur. The type was only produced in years 1217 and 1218. Later nazaranas of Shahjahanabad are of different types. A similar very fine specimen, holed and repaired was in the Dr. Lawrence Brent Collection, Spink Taisai sale 9 (lot 437) realised US $990.
