SHAH ALAM II, (A.H. 1173-1221), (A.D.1759-1806), round Gold mohur, (10.81 grams), struck at Ahmadnagar Farrukhabad mint, issued A.H. [11]92 (A.D. 1778-9), Regnal year 19, obv. Shah Alam II name at top, partial date on flan centre left, rev. mint name at base, Regnal year centre right, [cf.BMC 1170 (1194, RY21), cf.Indian Museum Calcutta 2270 (RY31), cf.Nagpur 1356 (same date and RY for rupee), cf.Lucknow 4497, cf.KM. SAC 97.2 (under Farrukhabad)]. Crude attempted milling on edge, extremely fine, extremely rare and an unpublished date and Regnal year.
Ex. Glendining's London, mid-late 1960's. $$ Farrukhabad although listed above in the references cited as a Mogul mint it is in fact a tributary to Awadh. It is a district in North India founded early in the 18th century by the Afghan, Mohammad Khan (d.1743). The subsequent struggles of his sons with Awadh, the Rohillas and Marathas culminated it becoming a tributary of Awadh. It was entirely surrounded in 1801 and ceded to the British. The issue in gold is very rare and are rarely seen.
