GORDIAN III, (A.D. 238-244), gold aureus, Rome mint, issued Summer A.D. 241, (5.23 grams), obv. laureate bust of Gordian III to right, around IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG, rev. around SALVS AVGVSTI, Salus standing to left, feeding snake held in her arms, (S.-, RIC 123, C.-). Good extremely fine and very rare.
This is a special issue to commemorate the marriage of Gordian III and Sabina Tranquillina in the summer of 241.
