Bid at live.noble.com.au

EDWARD IV OR V, (1483), silver groat, light coinage, mm. halved sun and rose, London mint, no marks at neck, (S.2146, N.1672). Toned, heavily clipped, the mintmark only discernable on the reverse, otherwise good fine and extremely rare.

Lot comes with a Baldwin ticket marked 3, Robert St, Adelphi, London. Spink notes that on the 12th February 1483, the cinquefoil coinage of Edward IV came to an end and an indenture between the king and the new mint master Bartholomew Reed saw the introduction of the sun and rose mintmark. Edward IV died on April 9, 1483 and the mint mark continued through the reign of Edward V and the start of the reign of Richard III. Reed's indenture contract ended 20th July 1483 which saw his replacement Robert Brackenbury with his boar's head mintmark. Richard III accession took place on June 26th 1483. Clearly the sun and rose mintmark covers the end of Edward IV and all the reign of Edward V.
