NEW ZEALAND, George VI, Royal Mint London uniface silver proof of the reverse of the florin, 1937 (11.32g). Attractively toned, brilliant FDC and excessively rare.
Ex A.H.F. Baldwin Collection (acquired from Sir Robert Johnson) and Spink Australia Sales 20 (lot 1292) and 39 (lot 974). On 13 December 1937, Queen Mary along with Princess Elizabeth and Margaret Rose, paid a visit to the Mint. To mark the occasion Robert Johnson, the deputy master, had a series of uniface coins struck in sterling silver which showed all the animals and birds on current British Commonwealth issues. Each of the royal visitors was presented with a set in a special leather case. The Mint Collection also contains a number of the different uniface strikings, but not a complete set (see Norweb Collections Sale Part 2 (lot 736).
