GROUP OF THIRTEEN: Military Cross (GRI); 1939-45 Star; Africa Star (entitled to 8th Army clasp); Pacific Star; Defence Medal 1939-45; War Medal 1939-45; Australia Service Medal 1939-45; Australian Active Service Medal 1945-75 - bar - Malaya; United Nations Korea Medal 1950-53; General Service Medal 1918-62 (ERII) - bar - Malaya; Australian Defence Medal 2006; Efficiency Medal (GVI Indiae Imp) - scroll - Australia; Pingat Jasa Malaysia Medal. 1944 on reverse lower arm of cross, second - fourth medals unnamed as issued, NX59154 H.W.Pope on fifth - seventh medals, 237560 H.W.Pope on eighth medal, 2/37560 H.W.Pope on ninth and tenth medals, 237560 H W Pope on eleventh and thirteenth medals and NX59154 Capt. H.W.Pope. A.I.F. on twelfth medal. First and twelfth medals engraved, fifth - seventh, ninth and tenth medals impressed, eighth, eleventh and thirteenth medals pantographed. Court mounted, 8th Army clasp missing, good very fine - extremely fine.

Lieutenant Colonel Howard Wilfred Pope, MC, RL, full-time service with Australian Imperial Force 13 Jul1940 to 30Jun1947; Interim Army 01Jul1947 to 14Aug1952; Australian Regular Army 15Aug1952 to 01Oct1973. Overseas service, Middle East 27Jun1941 to 27Feb1943; New Guinea 14Aug1943 to 07Mar1944; Japan/Korea 22Jul1954 to 04Feb1956; Singapore 03Sep1957 to 18Oct1959; London 12Jul1967 to 19Sep1969. Appointments:- Lieutenant 28Mar1941 and allotted to Royal Australian Infantry; 1947-49 firstly Aide-de-Camp and later Military Secretary to His Excellency the Governor-General of Australia; 27Jul1954 to 19Nov1954 Headquarters, 1st British Commonwealth Division; 01Jul1956 promoted to Major in the Australian Staff Corps; subsequently served in following postings, 06Jun1957 12th National Service Training Battalion, 3rd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment; 25Sep1959 Deputy Assistant Adjutant (DAA) and Quartermaster General (QMG), Headquarters 8th Infantry Brigade; 05Sep1960 DAA and QMG, Headquarters 1st Division; 06Nov1961 Second-in-Command - Infantry Centre; Deputy Assistant Adjutant General (DAAG), Directorate of Personnel Services, Army Headquarters; DAA and QMG, Australian Army Staff, United Kingdom; Deputy Assistant Quartermaster General (DAQMG), Headquarters Eastern Command; DAQMG, Headquarters 1st Logistic Support Force; General Staff Officer(GSO) Grade 2 (Training), Headquarters Eastern Command; GSO Grade 2, Headquarters 1st Division. 01Oct1973, having reached prescribed age for his rank, he retired and was granted the military title of Lieutenant Colonel by His Excellency the Governor-General. MC: LG 02Mar1944, CAG 10Feb1944, 'for great courage and leadership Song River, Katika and Finschhafen'. Presented to Major Pope, Military Secretary to the Governor-General on 29Aug1949 by His Excellency the Governor-General Mr W.J. McKell at Government House, Canberra. Citation: 'Throughout the operations in the Finschhafen area Lieutenant Pope led his platoon with the utmost vigour and courage until he was wounded. During the landing near the River Song he successfully led his platoon in an assault on two (2) strongly defended enemy machine gun posts near the beach. He later led his men in a most determined manner under intense enemy fire against enemy positions in the Kitaka village. During the final attack on Finschhafen Lieutenant Pope, although severely wounded, still endeavoured for a time to command his men during a counter attack on this position.' Together with No. 2 Walking Out dress uniform of Royal Australian Regiment, Barathea blue woollen jacket with collar badges, Lt-Colonel rank badges with R (Retired List) and three rows of ribbons for medal entitlement, includes numeral 8 for 8th Army but excluding Pingat Jasa Malaysia, affixed by sewing, the inside pocket has the label of Chorleys, 9-11 Hunter Street, Sydney and has typed on it 'Cb1004 all wool / 18/10/65 / Major H.W.Pope', also Barathea blue trousers with red side stripe, winter mess dress jacket in red wool with cream collar and mess dress vest in red wool and silk; small sew-on silver letter R (2); Statement of Awards from Army Headquarters (undated but obviously pre 1949); Statement of Service from Central Army Records 26Oct1973; Record of Service book; another bound booklet being Record of Service in the Australian Military Forces; Citation for MC from Governor-General; hard-covered booklet, Custom of the Army, 1/2/65, signed by Major H.W.Pope; Soldier's Pay Book (9) from 1940 to 1973; World Health Organization International Certificates of Vaccination book issued to Capt. H.W.Pope, 1954/1955; The Devil's Own Despatch, journal of 2/13 Battalion Association, July 2007; research documents including a scanned photograph of Major Pope M.C.
