SCOTLAND, Glasgow University, William Hunter 1783, in bronze (70mm) by N. McPhail, edge inscribed "GULIELMUS WEBSTER, IN CLASSE ZOOLOGIAE PRACT.1894". (Eimer.806). Cased, extremely fine.

William Hunter (1718-83), anatomist and obstetrician, a noted coin collector, he was the benefactor of the Hunterian Museum in Glasgow. The Hunterian Museum was noteworthy for its extensive ethnographic collections including numbers of Hawaiian artifacts including those brought back by Captain Cook on his third voyage. Struck c.1870 as a memorial by the University of Glasgow's medical faculty, awarded in this case for Zoology, but also for Anatomy, Pathology, Physiology and Surgery.
