INDIAN POLICE MEDAL FOR GALLANTRY (GVIR) 2ND TYPE (1944-48). Sultan Shah, Hd. Constable (Offg) No.2105 N.W.F.P. Engraved. Obverse with edge bruise at 4 o'clock, reverse with scratch in field, cleaned, otherwise very fine and rare.

Head Constable No.2105 Sultan Shah (Officiating) North West Frontier Province Police Force, Peshewar District. Gazette of India, No.9, Part 1, Section 1, 01Mar1947, page 254 'On the evening of the 24th October 1946, Offg.Head Constable Sultan Shah, No.2105, of Police Station West Cantonment, Peshewar, who was in mufti, noticed one Abdur Rauf, a Mahsud of Kanigurram, T.T., smoking in a tea shop in the Saddar Bazar. He suspected that Abdur Rauf was a smuggler, so he accosted him on some pretext and began to lead him to the police station to be searched. En route to the police station Abdur Rauf made an attempt to escape but was caught by the Head Constable. He then whipped out a revolver and tried to shoot the Head Constable who however, caught hold of the barrel and held on to it fast although Abdur Rauf fired two shots which passed through his clothes. Rauf was eventually overpowered and disarmed with the help of another Foot Constable who reached the spot. This officer displayed conspicuous gallantry and commendable devotion to duty at great risk to his life in arresting an armed and dangerous criminal'. This award is made for gallantry under regulation (d)(I) of the Regulations governing the grant of the Indian Police Medal and consequently carries with it the special allowance admissable to officers of and below the rank of Inspector of Police. With one page of research confirming the above.
