INDIAN POLICE MEDAL (GVIR) FOR GALLANTRY. Fateh Mohammad, Foot Constable, Ludhiana District, Punjab. Engraved. Very fine.

Foot Constable Fateh Mohammad No.189 of the Ludhiana District. 'On the 16th September 1938, this Foot Constable was a member of a raiding party organised by the Superintendent of Police to capture an extremely dangerous dacoit and murderer who was known to be well armed and was reported to be hiding in a house at Bnairowal. After the village had been surrounded a small party, including Foot Constable Fateh Mohammad, rushed the wall compound of the house in which the dacoit was being sheltered and immediately became exposed to fire from the dacoit at point blank range. Foot Constable Fateh Mohammad was wounded in the finger during this rush but he continued to take an active part in the operations which eventually resulted in the death of the dacoit. In spite of his wound Fateh Mohammad was unflagging and determined in his efforts to assist in the capture of the dacoit and throughout the operations displayed commendable courage and devotion to duty.' This award is made for gallantry under regulation d(i) of the regulations governing the grant of the Indian Police Medal and consequently carries with it the special allowance admissible to officers of and below the rank of Inspector.
