CONVICT LOVE TOKEN, stippled on a smoothed 1797 cartwheel penny, obverse, 'Thomas / Morris / Transported / For 7 Years On / September 15 / 1848. Aged / 28', reverse, 'A Gift / From Your / Dear Husband / Keep This In / Remembrance / Of Me When I / Am Far Away / From Thee.' Good very fine.
Records in the Old Bailey show that Thomas Morris was indicted on two counts of embezzlement from his employer, George Haslam, on whose account he collected money. He was convicted on both counts on 23 October 1848 and there were two other charges against the prisoner. He was sentenced to ’Transported for Seven Years.’
