PHILIPPVS behind equestrian statue to right on an arcade of five arches, within A Q V A MAR, flower below horse, (S.382, Cr.425/1, Syd.919a, RSC Marcia 28); L. Caecilius Metellus, (c.96 B.C.), silver denarius, Rome mint, (3.87 grams), obv. Apollo head to right, star below, L.METEL behind, A.AL[B.S.F.] before, rev. Roma seated to left on shields, Victory stands behind crowning her, C.MALL on left, ROMA in exergue, (S.220, Cr.335/1b, Syd.611a, Caecilia 45). First coin holed for suspension, the second somewhat pitted, otherwise toned, nearly very fine. (2)
Ex Charles E. Weber collection and Triton VII auction, lot 1357 (part). With detailed collector’s tickets. L. Marcius Philippus was the step-father of Gaius Octavius (later Augustus). His family claimed descent from Ancus Marcius the fourth king of Rome and his ancestor Q. Marcius Rex constructed the aqueduct known as the Aqua Marcia. It appears on the reverse of this coin.
