MILITARY CROSS (GRI). Tekrit 6th Nov.1917. Major N.Macleod Adam. 19th Battery R.F.A. Engraved. Good extremely fine.

MC: Supplement to Edinburgh Gazette 13/1/1919, p240, to Capt. (A./Maj.) Norman Macleod Adam, 19th Bty., R.F.A. (Mesopotamia). Citation: 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He commanded his battery with energy and skill on two occasions. Once he accompanied the advancing infantry into the enemy front line, whence he was able to direct a most destructive fire on the enemy. On the same day when another battery commander was wounded he assumed control of the battery as well as his own and fought both with ability and determination. He was wounded.'

Norman Macleod Adam attended Fettes College, Edinburgh from 1902 in Kimmerghame House and then Schoolhouse; 23Dec1910 as a Gentleman Cadet from the Royal Military Academy was apptd Second Lieutenant, LG 6/1/1911, p128; 16Jul1915 to 08Aug1916 apptd Temporary Captain, LG 16Nov1917, p11817; 27Sep1916 seconded to be Temporary Staff Captain, LG 2/3/1917, p2122; 18Dec1916 Staff Officer graded for purposes of pay as Deputy Assistant Adjutant-General, LG 22/6/1917, p6187; 05Jan1917 Capt N.M.Adam R.A. attached to Hd.Qr. Units, LG 13Mar1917, p2605; 05Jan1917 apptd D.A.A.G., LG 6/7/1920, p7232; 05Jan1917 apptd Brigade Major, LG 6/7/1920, p7233; 25Sep1917 apptd Acting Major, LG 14Jan1918, p809; 06Nov1917 awarded MC and wounded.

He served with Indian Division, France 1914-15; Mesopotamia 1915-17; and Lowland Division, Palestine 1918; France 1918.

Brigade Major N.M.Adam, MC, RFA was killed in action on 28Aug1918 and buried in an isolated grave close to Fontaine-les-Croiselles near Arras. Despite a French law forbidding the exhumation of bodies, the wealth and influence of Norman's father, Major General F.A.Adam C.B. enabled him to enlist the help of the local mayor and the body was exhumed in June 1922 then taken to Glasgow where it was reburied in July in the Glasgow Necropolis (see p280 of The Quick and the Dead: Fallen Soldiers and Their Families in the Great War by Richard van Emden).

Norman Macleod Adam is recorded on the Fettes College Roll of Honour where it shows that he was awarded the Military Cross and also Mentioned in Despatches.
