CAPTAIN JULIUS LAUTERBACH, black and white engraving of Lauterbach in uniform personally signed Capt. Julius Lauterbach-Emden and also a separate signature on paper, signed Julius Lauterbach-Emden. Extremely fine. (2)

Captain Julius Lauterbach was made famous in a fictionalized history of WWI titled 'Rogue Raider: The Tale of Captain Lauterbach and the Singapore Mutiny' by Nigel Barley, 2006. This book came about because after the Emden was defeated by HMAS Sydney on 9 November 1914 many of the German prisoners were transferred to Tanglin goal in Singapore on 15 December 1914. The guards were mostly Punjabi Muslims and Lauterbach is credited with spreading false stories about the Kaiser and his son converting to Islam and other rumours which culminated in a Sepoy revolt.
