THRACE, Kingdom of, Lysimachus, (323-281 B.C.), gold stater, (8.52 g), uncertain mint but probably Byzantium, issued after 281 B.C., probably about 200 B.C., obv. head of Alexander to right, with diadem and horn of Ammon, rev. Athena enthroned to left, supporting Nike, spear behind, lion head to extreme left, to right **BASILEWS*, to left **LUSIMACOU*, trident in exergue, (cf.S.6813, Thompson -, cf.Seyrig "Essays in Greek Coinage" to Stanley Robinson, Plate 23, 9 [similar obverse die]). Of great rarity, unpublished, nearly extremely fine/extremely fine, of fine style and probably unique.
Ex Noble Numismatics Auction Sale 78 (lot 4900). The simple trident in the exergue was used as Seyrig suggests for Byzantium from 205-195 B.C. The lion head in extreme left has been previously unlisted.
