AUGUSTUS, (27 B.C. - A.D. 14), silver denarius, Rome mint, issued 16 B.C. (4.01 g), obv. SPQR/IMP/CAES on pedestal of equestrian statue of Augustus to right, city-walls and gate in background, rev. L VINICIVS L F III VIR, around on cippus inscribed [SPQR]/ I[M]P CAE/QVOD V/M S EX/EA P Q IS/ AD A DE, (S.1618, RIC 362, RSC 543, BMC 82). Toned, weak in places, otherwise very fine and rare.

Ex Collection of Barry Allen Jones with ticket from M.R. Roberts. The type represents a statue erected in the emperor's honour. The cippus, set up in Rome's Regio VII, records Augustus' generosity in making special contributions to the public treasury in order to help finance the restoration of the public roads.
